Proactive or Reactive

I heard a story last week of a man that saved for years to buy a brand new car that he could be proud of.
He finally picked up a shiny black BMW with fine tan leather and all the bells whistles.
The man had only been driving the car for about a month, when one day he came driving down a tight neighborhood street and he heard a loud…THUMP, on the passenger side of his car.
He slammed on his brakes to see what had happened.
As he walked around the car looking for something he possibly ran over he didn’t see anything.
That’s when he looked over to the passenger side door and saw a huge dent in his beautiful car. Anger started to build up inside him.
As he looked around he eventually found a brick on the ground and then heard a boy yelling for help down the street.
The man ran down to the boy and as he got closer and closer the anger melted away.
The boy said to the man, “I am so sorry about your car, but my brother fell off the curb in his wheelchair and his arm is pinned under the wheel and I can’t pick him up alone.”
The man helped the boy up and sent them on their way.
When he got back to the car he felt totally different about the dent. He decided to keep the dent as a reminder that he should always be looking out for ways to help serve others without needing to have a brick hit him to slow down and help those in need.
Whether that story is true or a fable I thought it was cute and taught a good lesson about serving others.
I also think it is a good teaching opportunity to see how the man’s perspective went from being reactive to becoming proactive.
