Free Throw Experiment

I recently started to re-read the book “Psycho-Cybernetics by Dr. Maxwell Maltz and commentary by Matt Furey. The book was originally published in 1960 and a great read. I couldn’t recommend it more.
In the book Dr. Maltz shares a story about a research experiment done to show the effects of mental practice i.e. visualization using your imagination.
The controlled experiment took 3 groups of people. At the beginning of the experiment they all shot a certain amount of basketball free throws and recorded how many baskets were made.
The first group of people practiced shooting these shots everyday for 20 days.
The second group of people had no practice in between.
The third group of people visualized shooting basketballs successfully everyday for 20 days but had no physical practice.
After all 3 groups came back to be tested and see what their improvement was.
The first group improved by 24%.
The second group had no improvement.
The third group that only visualized improved by 23%.
Isn’t that incredible?
I think it is fascinating.
When I ask many of my prospective clients what they want from their investments, they struggle to answer.
It’s almost as if it is the first time they have thought about it.
Most people seem to be “programmed” to only listen to the mainstream… i.e. put your money in a 401k at your employer and wait 40 years and hope it is there.
But what most don’t know is there are many other ways you can accomplish your financial goals.
So my challenge to you is, over the weekend, think about what kind of financial future you want to create.
Be realistic, but be positive. Use your imagination and visualize your success.
What will your investments do for you:
Provide cash flow
Obtain the growth of the market
Be protected from market downturns
Need to be collecting rents and doing repairs
Sitting for long periods of time until maybe someday getting a payoff
Be tax free
After you do this over and over you might start to realize that some changes need to be made.
You are in the driver’s seat. Nobody cares more about your financial well being and future than you do.
