Chicken with a Freight Train
Written by Steve | Published: |
Have you ever played the game called “chicken”?
You know… the one where you have two competing players headed toward each other and whoever moves first gets called “chicken” and loses.
Not a very smart game and I hope it’s not a weekend hobby of yours, ha ha.
That’s exactly how I feel about the markets right now.
Markets have been going up despite the Leading Economic Indicators (LEI) data continuing to be negative.
It seems to be like everyone is trying to ride the wave as long as they can.
Instead of a melt down, it’s like a melt up. Going up and up and up until….
It’s too late to lock in gains.
I speak to so many people that say things like “if only I sold my house/stocks/etc before 2008”, with a tone of regret.
Like they say “hindsight is 20/20” it’s easy to make those judgements after the fact, but what you do in the present is what makes you a successful investor or not.
In the financial documentary, “The Retirement Deception” [email me if you need a free promo code] one of the experts talks about “locking in your lifestyle”.
It’s a concept that helps to increase financial peace and stability.
The basic idea is to convert some of your speculative assets i.e. any assets subject to market shifts and put some of those assets into non-correlated actuarial based assets that are also growing.
This approach is the only way to truly enjoy financial peace.
So if you still feel like you are playing chicken with a freight train and want to lock in your gains and lifestyle, you may want to act fast before the winds of the market change. As you well know, they can change very quickly.
What do traditional advisors say when the markets drop?
“Just hold on, it will come back”
“We’re in this for the long haul”
“It’s not a real loss because we aren’t going to sell”
“The market is on sale. Do you have any more money to buy in?”
And other fallacies.
So keep your head up and watch for that train. If you need help getting off the tracks let us know.
