My wife and I just started a new personal development course with Darren Hardy this past week and it really has got me thinking [And reminded me of the picture below of my wife and I in front of the “Thinking Man” Statue at the Rodin Museum in Paris, France.]
In the first phase of the course he talks about how our individual “operating system” is what creates our success or failure.
You have goals, especially financial goals…
- How much you want to earn?
- Where you want to live?
- The trips you want to go on?
- That boat you have our eye on?
- The schools you want to put our kids in?
You might be pretty good about hitting your individual goals or you might not; and what Darren Hardy mentioned in the course is that it all comes down to your REASON.
Some people call this your WHY, but Darren outlines that your deep REASON that pushes you through adversity to reach your goal is what makes all the difference.
Here are the five categories that can help you discover your reason for hitting your goals:
Self – this consist of personal accomplishments/accolades, increasing your status, praise, recognition, winning, developing your personal identity.
Family – sometimes you will do more for others than for yourself. Your kids or helping a family member could be your driving force.
Contribution – finding a bigger cause to give back. This could be a charity you love, a church you are involved in, or just an overall mission that really gets you going.
Revenge – this is when you have been told you can’t be successful and you want to prove that person, or teacher, or (fill in the blank) that you can and you will be successful in spite of all that is working against you.
Disgust – this is when you get so sick and tired of being in your current state. Out of shape, broke, not where you want to be, wanting more assets and opportunities. You get so disgusted that it propels you to succeed.
I thought this was very powerful. As long as your goals are positive it really doesn’t matter as much what the origin of your REASON is.
Your REASON is what is going to push you through the challenges to hit your goals.
This obviously applies to all aspects of your life but as it relates to your wealth, let’s talk about that for a second?
What is your next goal:
Have more investments working for you? Increase your cash flow? Making sure your finances are structured with the proper legal structure or trust to protect your assets? Have your money growing in any market condition?Protecting assets from taxMaking sure you don’t run out of money in retirement?
There are many common goals that I hear when talking with my clients, but what I love to hear is their REASON for wanting to obtain that.
In reality it makes all the difference and will often change the direction of the strategy we take.
Today, I challenge you to take some quiet time, think about your goals, and then write down your REASONS why you want those things.
And if you are really brave… reply to this email and share those reasons with me. I would love that!
I hope you have a great weekend and to all the Fathers out there, Happy Father’s Day!
