Giving Up Your Power

A couple of weeks ago one of my sons was having an emotional meltdown. It was all normal kids stuff. Someone called him a name and took his toy.
Later that day my wife and I were talking to him about the difference between acting and reacting and giving up your power.
He was looking in the distance when we were talking about not reacting but for some reason the phrase “giving up your power” brought him back into the conversation. We explained that he has the ability to choose whether or not he wants to keep feeling upset or not.
Still not sure it sunk in but at least we tried to do some sort of parenting, ha ha. It’s a work in progress, right?
This year has been a whirlwind in the markets primarily because of what the Federal Reserve has been saying and doing.
As they have been talking about raising rates or quantitative tightening, or actually raising interest rates to try and fight off inflation the market has been pricing in all sorts of speculation, pushing both the bond and stock markets down.
But this is not new. The Fed has always been a giant market manipulator and non-congruent when making statements.
Just look at some of the comments from Lael Brainard, a Federal Reserve Vice Chair.
Just about 8 months ago saying they expected “inflation to decelerate” and now in June 2022 saying we may have not “seen peak inflation.”
Most Americans have been programmed by wall street and the media to think that the only way to save and invest is in “the market” stocks/bonds/mutual funds/ETFs etc. primarily through a 401k/IRA or something like that.
In my opinion if that’s all you are doing to build your wealth you are giving up your power to political talking heads that say one thing one month and switch their position the next.
How do you build a solid financial foundation around that?
