How One Act of Generosity Can Inspire Your Retirement Planning

Imagine one of your investments skyrocketing over the next few months, giving you more money than you ever dreamed of. What would you do next? Buy a new house, upgrade your car, travel the world? Now imagine you’ve done all that, and there’s still plenty left in the bank.
What comes next?
This question reminds me of an inspiring individual who turned a financial windfall into something life-changing.
A few years ago, my family was going through a tough time—my young son was battling leukemia. During those long days in the hospital, we met a man who had made an extraordinary amount of money from his investments. But what he did with it truly left a lasting impact.
After he bought his new home and car etc., he decided to give back in a big way. He founded a charity for kids in children’s hospitals, giving them hope and joy during the most difficult times in their lives. He invited these kids and their families and friends to his warehouse filled with cars, memorabilia, and fun trinkets and gadgets. He even had a fireman’s pole built into his warehouse.
To some kids, he would give a replica of one of his car keys to and said, “Hey when you get old enough to drive, bring this key back and I’ll let you drive one of my cars.”
His generosity gave these children something to look forward to—a future beyond their treatments, a reason to hope.
His story made me think: What impact do we want to leave on the world?
After we’ve secured our finances to meet our own needs, how can we make a difference?
When planning for retirement, it’s easy to focus solely on financial security. But what if you could create a retirement that allows you to live comfortably AND give back? Whether through charity, supporting a cause you believe in, or simply helping others, your retirement plan could do more than just sustain you—it could make an impact.
As you think about your financial future, ask yourself: Once you’ve reached your goals, how will you make a difference? Let’s talk about creating a plan that not only secures your future but helps you become part of the change.
