Keep Your Eyes On That Kid…
Written by Steve | Published: |
About a month ago my oldest daughter (who is only five years old) was helping me make eggs in the morning.
She is one of my best helpers and puts a tremendous amount of effort into doing whatever she does very well and has fun doing it.
While I was washing my hands and not watching her for a brief moment she took it upon herself to crack another egg into the pan.
When I turned back around I saw that she did a pretty good job but was concerned that she got some egg shells in with the rest of the eggs.
After looking around a bit and not finding anything we finished breakfast and served it up.
When I was on nearly my last bite.
CRUNCH…
Yep, it was those eggshells.
If you are a parent/grandparent or have dealt with kids you know that you have to watch them pretty close.
Eggshells aren’t that big of a deal but other situations could be much worse.
Right now what any investor has to keep their eyes on is the Fed and the Treasury.
Their actions and policies greatly affect the success (or failure) of your portfolio, sometimes more than you would want to admit.
From a high level here are some things they have done that you can attribute a lot of your portfolio growth/decline.
In 2006 the housing market started to turn and in 2008 the global financial crisis began. It wasn’t until 7 months after Bear Stearns failed that the Fed created a “bailout” package with $700B.
In 2020 the Fed came in with $5Trillion in ‘bailout’ almost immediately.
And again in 2023 with some banks starting to fail there was a $100B “bailout” in about 6 days.
Now there are 13 special funding facilities (essentially lines of credit) given out to other countries to use “just in-case.”
So do you think that when the Fed has to get involved to hold up the market or “prevent” a crash that shows signs of a strong or a weak economy?
How do you think this could affect your portfolio?
With some of the recent market run up I hope your portfolios are starting to look more healthy.
To some they might like the roller coaster ups and downs because the ride gives them a thrill.
To others they might see some wisdom in closing out some of their positions and finding another avenue to give them growth and protection.
