The True Nature of Wealth: A Function of Time, Not Dollars

This coming week my youngest child of five turns two-years-old. I can’t believe it! Time has gone so fast. I love this age because their little voices are so cute, they are starting to say new words all the time and are toddling around being curious with everything they see.
It’s had me thinking a lot about time and how it is our number one scarcest asset. It’s something we can’t create more of and really we don’t even know how much time we have left.
(Me and “the bubs” last Christmas in Hawaii)
A couple of days ago I was being interviewed for some web content and I spouted off one of Robert Kiyosaki drops of wisdom, stating “Wealth is a function of time, not dollars.” I didn’t think much of it, but the gentlemen interviewing paused and asked me to clarify what I meant.
Essentially what I said to him was that in the world of finance, we often find ourselves fixated on numbers—dollar amounts, rates of return, interest rates, and market fluctuations. However, true wealth transcends these figures.
What this means for you is simple yet profound. The value of wealth isn’t merely in how much money we have today, but in how long that money can sustain us. It’s about financial freedom—having the ability to live comfortably without being bound by the need to work continuously.
Think of wealth in terms of how many years of financial security your current assets can provide.
Can your investments, savings, and income streams sustain you for a year, ten years, or a lifetime?
And…can some outside force steal that away from you i.e. markets falling, fed changing rates, government changing taxes, etc.
This is the real measure of wealth.
This perspective becomes particularly important as we consider our retirement plans. It’s not just about accumulating as much money as possible; it’s about making sure those dollars work for you over time. Whether through smart investments, annuities, or other financial products, the goal is to create a situation where your money continues to generate income, ensuring your financial stability for as long as you live.
In a world where the financial landscape is constantly shifting—from global economic trends to local market dynamics—having a strategy that focuses on time as a key factor in wealth management is crucial. It’s not just about how much you have, but how well your wealth is structured to last.
