Where There’s Smoke…

When I was growing up my parents moved our family to a neighborhood that was still being developed.
My brothers and I loved it because we could ride around and explore the orange groves and see all the job sites where new homes were being built.
We often were able to get building material scraps from the homes where they had a discard pile.
We borrowed my dad’s tools, took all our scraps and started to build a fort in the orange groves.
I remember being so excited to come home from school, drop off my bag and go work on our fort.
After finishing our masterpiece after a couple of weeks we went back to our fort, but there was a problem…
This time there was a bunch of trash in our fort along with some old clothes and blankets.
Our fort was taken over by a homeless person.
We were pretty upset as you could imagine but as young boys not wanting to get into a fight with a grown adult we left it alone.
About a week later riding our bikes passed the same orange grove we noticed smoke coming from the trees. Our curiosity got the best of us so we went into the smoke filled orchard.
We found that our hijacked fort had caught on fire. It wasn’t completely burned down but the walls were definitely black.
There is an old proverb that states “where there is smoke there usually is fire.”
Meaning if you find some sort of evidence or truth there is usually a bigger problem or story.
A friend sent me this picture this week about corporate bankruptcies.
It’s another pretty good smoke signal that we still have a lot of work to do to repair our economy.
And a good warning to take a closer look at your investments especially if you own equity positions in corporations.
